The Bahrain Dukeries 2008

Report By Alice Beet

Dukeries 80km National ER class

I entered Nobel for his first race at Dukeries in the 80km National class. We arrived Friday lunch time and met Nobel’s identical twin- Cziko!! It really is quite scary how similar they look! A YR team with identical horses- how perfect!!

Nobel’s morning started at 3.30 am as I managed to convince Philip to feed Nobel when he fed his own horse and Tricia’s 160km entered horse. Nobel was slightly confused as my race did not start until 9am- lay in!! Having his breakfast that early was fantastic though and he thought by 6 am he was due another feed!

I wasted time in the morning hand grazing him and gossiping until it was time to start. The start of the race was slightly scary, we did the first mile on 2 legs purely through excitement. After this I luckily managed to hook up with Dace and Lottie who were also doing 80km and we decided to ride together. It was the beginning of a beautiful love story for Nobel and Lottie. Nobel came into the VG and went out slightly ahead of Lottie so we ended up doing the second loop alone which didn’t phase him. He completely loved being crewed by my dad, Sarah and Doug, however, he needs to learn that not every crew is out there for him- bless him!!

After flying straight through the second VG with Nobel and trotting past the stables to go out again Dace had managed to catch up and we rode the last black loop together, having got that far we were both surprised to still find a slight breaking problem with our ponies! They happily cantered round the last loop and other than Nobel’s massive spook at a log in which he nearly squashed Dace’s leg it was all peaceful and thoroughly enjoyable. We trotted over the finish line together with our two loved up ponies and both presented straight away been as our heart rates were low. I was so proud of him being only just 7 and behaving so perfectly at his first race ride. I was delighted to hear he had been placed fifth as I did not ride the distance as a race and just treat it as a learning curve for him. We averaged at just under 16kph.  Nobel is off to Euston Park next, all being well, to do 120km fei as his qualification for Young Riders. It is my last year this year so I’m feeling very old and very sad- I’m not ready to grow up yet!! Thank you to my crew - ever committed dad, Sarah and Doug xx
